Dear John
Gender equality cannot be taken for granted, and progress is not always linear.
This isn’t news to you.
But what might be news to you is that in 2025, across the globe, we saw gains for women's and girls’ rights, sometimes in the most surprising of ways. It’s been a year that has shown us what is possible when collaboration meets legal expertise and tenacity.

At Equality Now, we believe the law can be one of the most powerful foundations for gender equality. And when those laws are implemented fully and coherently, women and girls feel and experience the benefit. This year, with partners and advocates around the world, we helped make that belief a reality.
To date in 2025, we supported 14 legal and policy reforms that improved the rights of more than 51 million women and girls. These milestones were the result of long-term commitment and thoughtful collaboration with our partners. Here are just a few of the achievements we are proud to have been part of:
* In Bolivia ([link removed]) , our advocacy helped secure a full legal ban on child marriage, strengthening the rights and futures of over 440,000 girls.
* In Kyrgyzstan ([link removed]) , we supported reforms that now provide stronger legal protection against sexual violence and increased access to the workforce for over 2 million women through workplace law changes.
* In the United States, our input helped shape the newly adopted Take It Down Act ([link removed]) , which sets new standards for online safety and protects millions of women and girls from digital exploitation.
* In East Africa ([link removed]) , we contributed to the development of a regional law to address and prevent female genital mutilation. This is a step toward greater safety for millions of girls.
* Our In Search of Justice ([link removed]) report analysed rape laws across 22 Arab States, revealing that only a minority meet international standards. This work catalysed policy conversations in multiple countries and reached an audience of over 6 million people.
* Our technology-facilitated gender-based violence reports, including on India ([link removed]) and Kenya ([link removed]) , were cited in legislative hearings and media across 14 countries
These reforms show that legal change is not only possible, it is happening.
And when the law reflects the needs and rights of women and girls and is implemented properly, it can serve as a foundation for wider transformation.
You can read more about these achievements in our roundup blog ([link removed]) for 2025.
Progress in 2025 + ([link removed])
In the coming year, we will launch our next five-year strategy: Securing Rights, Transforming Futures. It is a response to the deep need we see in our communities and institutions for systems that reflect equality, dignity and fairness. It is built on the knowledge that progress is possible when we design with equality in mind and act together.
As always, I am grateful to stand alongside you in this shared work. Thank you for all the ways you show up for women and girls.
In solidarity,
S. Mona Sinha
Global Executive Director
