Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. manufacturing has shrunk for the ninth straight month.
Nine months. That’s not a small blip. That’s a huge warning sign.
Leaders across the country, regardless of political party, should be alarmed.
It’s no secret what’s driving it: Trump’s chaotic tariffs. Specifically, reckless tariffs put in place by Donald Trump continue to weigh down American manufacturing – raising prices, upending supply chains, and undermining the very industries that are the backbone of Michigan’s economy.
I’m a no-nonsense gal, so I’m going to be direct: Trump’s chaotic trade policies are hurting Michigan.
This isn’t a theory. It’s not an overly dramatic statement. It’s what I’m seeing and hearing every day when I talk to manufacturers, suppliers, and trade workers across Michigan.
Whether I’m in a union hall in Macomb County or visiting a parts plant in Grand Rapids, the message is the same: Costs are up, demand is shaky, and our country’s competitive edge is being chipped away.
The Trump tariffs were billed as a strategy to protect American jobs. But here’s what they’ve actually done:
Raised the cost of raw materials
Made it harder to compete globally
Stifled innovation and growth in the very places we need them most
Created a wave of instability that has manufacturers feeling anxious about the future
Now, some folks in Washington may shrug and tell you Trump’s tariffs are worth it because American manufacturing is past its prime. They’ll say Michigan can’t compete.
To that I say: Try us.
I know this state. I was born and raised here. I know the Michigan way. When we’re up against the wall, we fight back.
When I was working on the auto rescue in 2009, and the country was in crisis, Michigan didn’t give up – we got to work. Our team helped save 200,000 Michigan jobs and brought the industry back from the brink. All because our workers are the best in the world.
We are not a state that folds in the face of a challenge. We are a state built by working people. Builders. Makers. Innovators. And when we have leaders who believe in us and fight for us, we rise.
But Michigan can’t thrive if the administration is making shoot-from-the-hip, change-by-the-minute decisions on tariffs that raise prices on working people. That’s not leadership; that’s chaos.
And I won’t stand by while Washington politics makes life harder for Michigan families.
Our manufacturing future is worth fighting for.
That means investing in workforce training and apprenticeships. It means securing the supply chains that keep our factories running. And it means having leaders in the Senate who understand the nuances of manufacturing – the grit, skill, and pride it takes to build something with your own two hands.
That’s why I’m running for Senate – to be that champion.
I’m not in this race for a viral moment. I’m in it for the community I love. For the people who make things. The Michiganders who work the line, fix the machines, and train the next generation with calloused hands and open hearts.
Michigan made me who I am. And I will never stop fighting for it.
