Dear Jack,
I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy during these difficult times. I'll be sending weekly Bulletins so that you have all the latest updates you need.
Special Session
Last week, Governor Northam called for a special session of the General Assembly to convene on August 18th to tackle budget issues and criminal justice reform. My team and I have already pre-filed two bills for this upcoming session. The first bill would allow the Parole Board to consider compassionate release for geriatric and terminally ill prisoners, and the second bill would codify common sense use-of-force guidelines for police officers that emphasize de-escalation tactics. If you want to make your voice heard and suggest legislation for the special session, please email my office at
[email protected] with your thoughts.
VEC Updates
Last week, I, along with 4o other lawmakers in Virginia, sent a letter to the VEC regarding their operations. We wanted to express our gratitude to the hardworking folks at the VEC, who are handling incredible numbers of cases as quickly as possible, while providing feedback on where their operations can and must improve. We are continuing to work with the VEC to ensure that unemployment benefits are paid out as quickly as possible to eligible applicants.
In addition, the VEC is hosting a statewide virtual hiring event next Tuesday, July 28th, from 1-5pm. More information can be found on the VEC website.
School Reopening Updates
Last week, Prince William County Public Schools decideded to begin their 2020-2021 school year with 100% distance learning during the first quarter. Additional details on the PWCS reopening plan can be found here.
Tomorrow night, the Loudoun County School Board will be having a meeting where they will be discussing reopening plans. The public comment period will begin at 5:30pm. You can learn more here.
