Fair representation for Black and Hispanic voters is under attack in Florida:
Gov. DeSantis is pushing for a mid-decade redistricting session in Florida, which could target congressional districts held by Black and Hispanic Democrats. — Tallahassee Democrat
For months, we’ve been sounding the alarm that Trump’s redistricting crisis would keep escalating. Now, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is taking direct aim at fair representation by calling for a mid-decade map redraw that could zero in on the two districts where Black voters have the most voting power and where Hispanic Floridians support Democrats.
Florida’s congressional map is already gerrymandered. We have to be clear about what’s happening here: Ron DeSantis is moving in lockstep with Trump’s orders not only to rig the midterm elections, but also to disenfranchise voters of color by stripping them of their ability to choose leaders that represent their values.
The attacks on our democracy keep on coming — and we need your help to continue fighting back. Can you make a donation of any amount to power this critical work to defend fair representation across the nation? [[link removed]]
Republicans’ effort to undermine democracy in Florida isn’t happening in a vacuum. It’s a part of a long-term strategy that’s been years in the making. And it’s happening against the backdrop of a slew of anti-voter laws passed in the last few years, which have imposed stricter voter ID laws, made voting by mail more difficult, and undermined grassroots voter registration efforts.
DeSantis has also made it clear that he’s closely watching the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais for a permission slip to further siphon away equal representation.
While this news is deeply concerning for Florida voters, we must be reminded that what’s happening in Florida won’t stay in Florida. Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri show us that this is a growing threat that could reach every corner of the country.
