Dear Friend,

In the newsletter this week But first...
Resident doctors (previously known as junior doctors) are on strike again in England, and claims are being made to support or discredit the justification for the strikes.

Labour MP Oliver Ryan suggested that resident doctors had a 29% pay increase last year, while the BMA claimed that resident doctors have had a 21% pay cut since 2008/9. We’ve surgically dissected both of these claims.
For a full account on what resident doctors earn and what the BMA are asking for in the latest round of strikes, read our recently updated explainer.
Best wishes,

Bondi Beach misinformation

We often see misinformation spreading widely after significant crisis events such as the recent mass shooting in Bondi Beach.

And other posts we checked misidentified the man who tackled one of the suspected gunmen.

Have teacher numbers gone up or down under Labour?

Last week Keir Starmer claimed that there are more teachers than when the Conservatives left office, but Kemi Badenoch said there were 400 fewer teachers since the election.

How many Brits emigrated from the UK?

Our fact checking team often looks into immigration claims but this week we’re looking at a couple of suspicious emigration claims. Did 695,000 Brits leave the UK last year or was that number actually much closer to 250,000?
We have also looked at another claim that 110,000 Brits between the ages of 16 and 34 have left the country since June of this year.
