Dear NRDC Supporter,
By any description, the Gulf of California — located between Baja California and northwest Mexico — is a natural gem, renowned globally for its beauty and rare natural diversity.
My father Capt. Jacques Yves Cousteau, a legendary ocean explorer, named it "The Aquarium of the World". Mexican poet Homero Aridjis called it the "Serengeti of the Sea" because of its incredibly diverse marine life.
I fell in love with this extraordinary place when we explored it together in the ‘80s. Now, Mexico Pacific, a U.S. liquified natural gas developer, wants to turn it into an industrial export gas station.
This project — known as Saguaro — would impact thousands of marine and land species. Almost 40% of all marine mammal species, 891 types of fish, 154 shorebird species, 115 reptile species, and five types of sea turtles — including the 2,000-pound leatherback — call it home.
I cannot morally stand by and watch. That's why I'm supporting NRDC. They are announcing a NEW 5x MATCH — for today only — to stop this project.
Will you join me to protect one of the most biologically rich seas on the planet?
Please make your gift to NRDC before midnight and it will be MULTIPLIED 5x, up to $75,000, to defend threatened wildlife and wild places everywhere.
The Gulf of California is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. It's famous for its crystal blue waters, vibrant coral reefs, and remarkable diversity of life, making it one of the most iconic marine ecosystems on Earth.
But massive gas export facilities would bring enormous tankers — each over 900 feet long — through these waters hundreds of times per year. The endangered blue whale and many other species would lose vital habitat, and the critically endangered vaquita could be pushed to extinction.
NRDC and its coalition partners are pushing back — and it's working. Through aggressive advocacy, construction has already been stalled, needed financial support has failed to materialize, and international voices opposed to this destruction have intensified. But Mexico Pacific is demanding to keep the project alive, and we can't let up now.
When people like you and me stand together to support NRDC, we can protect ocean wonders like the Gulf of California.
Your gift today will be MULTIPLIED 5x to power this work and so much more — protecting our oceans from drilling, defending marine mammals like dolphins and whales from destructive fishing practices, and standing up for the wild places our children will inherit.
When you protect the ocean, you protect yourself. That's what I've learned in over 80 years of diving and exploration. I want young people today to have what my father gave me: the chance to fall in love with a living ocean.
Please join me before midnight. Your gift will be MATCHED 5x, up to $75,000.
With oceans of thanks,
Jean-Michel Cousteau
