Trump is doubling down on his secret police force, John.
Moments ago he said the federal troops in Portland are doing a “fantastic job” and that he plans to send more federal agents to other major US cities.
This is deeply troubling news and it’s why we need to double our pressure on Congress before this situation gets any more out of hand. Trump is trying to turn our country into an oppressive, authoritarian regime, and we will not have it.
We need Congress to respond to this unconstitutional and illegal attack with the only appropriate response: hold Trump accountable. We can’t wait, please sign our petition demanding that Congress take action.
Congress must respond »
In case you didn’t see our email on Friday, here’s what you missed:
Trump issued a 6-month executive order on July 18 authorizing federal officers to patrol cities to protect federal monuments and buildings. These forces are now arresting, tear gassing, and shooting at protestors in Portland. These officers are in unmarked vehicles, arresting individuals without reading their Miranda rights and with no explanation why they’re being detained.
It’s a shameless abuse of power. Trump has made it clear he will stop at nothing in his war against protestors and the Black Lives Matter movement. In this moment of crisis, Trump is igniting the flames of violence and unrest and using the repressive tactics of his authoritarian friends.
It’s a direct threat against our right to protest, our constitution, and our democracy that was built from peaceful resistance and freedom of assembly. Already over 20,000 of you have signed our petition calling for action. The ACLU has filed a lawsuit to fight the presence of federal agents in Portland, but our Congress members need to immediately get to work overturning Trump’s executive order.
Bold action from Congress is the only appropriate response to this situation, but Congress will only act if we demand it.
That’s why we’re asking you to make it clear that you demand accountability. Will you add your name to urge Congress to hold the White House accountable for this unconstitutional attack against protestors?
In solidarity,
