As an emergency physician, I have treated women and girls with every type of reproductive healthcare emergency.
That includes a woman who nearly died after using an object to induce an abortion. She did not realize that her rights were THEN protected and put her life in jeopardy as a result.
That's why I have been clear that abortion is a fundamental part of reproductive healthcare, access to which must be protected.
Today, we found out how tenuous abortion rights are in Pennsylvania. Today, we voted to codify abortion rights in the Pennsylvania Constitution.
It passed - BY ONE VOTE.
As the only physician in our General Assembly, I spoke to combat lies told that abortion is performed electively to term. Such nonsense is an insult to women and to the dedicated health professionals who every day care for women.
ONE VOTE - that is what stands between protecting abortion rights and the abyss in Pennsylvania.
