At today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, something chilling
happened.
When Senator Blumenthal used his entire line of questioning to ask
judicial nominees about the 2020 election and January 6, the responses
were damning.
Over and over again, the nominees hid behind evasive language about
“certification,” refusing to acknowledge basic, indisputable facts of
history.
When Senator Blumenthal pointed out that nominees weren’t actually
answering the question, one responded with “I can’t give any further
commentary.”
Then came January 6:
When asked directly whether the United States Capitol was attacked on
January 6, a nominee outright refused to answer, saying “it’s debated.”
That’s when Senator Blumenthal called it exactly what it was:
“These are basic facts… If you are so much in fear of answering these
questions, how will you have the courage to be a fair and impartial judge
who follows the law without fear or favor?”
It’s true. If you can’t say who won the election, and if you can’t say the
Capitol was attacked, then you have no business holding a seat on the
federal bench.
