I wasn’t surprised when President Trump tried to federalize the DC police department.

What frustrated me was the false pretense.

He claims it’s about crime — even though violent crime in DC is at a 30-year low. This isn’t about public safety. It’s about control.

Deploying National Guard troops and threatening federal takeovers doesn’t make communities safer. Military officers are not trained to do community policing. And you cannot push people toward safety by pushing them out of sight.

We know what actually works: investing in communities, housing, mental health care, and violence interruption. Working with DC residents — not using our city as a political stage.

And here’s the truth that makes this even more urgent: If DC were a state, he couldn’t do this.

He couldn’t federalize our police force. He couldn’t override local authority. He couldn’t treat DC like a political pawn.

That’s why DC statehood matters right now. And that’s why this congressional race matters so much.
