Dear Friends,

On October 3rd 2025, French photojournalist Antoni Lallican, aged 37, was killed in a targeted Russian drone strike.

He and his Ukrainian colleague Georgiy Ivanchenko — both experienced freelance war‑zone photojournalists — were accompanying the 4th Ukrainian Tank Brigade as they reported on construction work to defend the region from the Russian invasion.

They were hit roughly twenty kilometres from the front line while wearing helmets, protective “press” vests and carrying cameras — clear signs that they were journalists. They were killed nevertheless.

Killing journalists who are clearly identified and protected is a war crime under international law.

Antoni devoted his energy to creating deeply human documentary photography. For several years, he covered the impact of the war in Ukraine on the people living through it, particularly in the Donbas. His photographs have been published in numerous French and international media outlets.

He is the sixteenth journalist — the fourth French journalist— to be killed in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Nearly 150 journalists have been subject to abuse — from arrests to murder —since the start of the war.

Within hours of the strike, pro-Kremlin websites and Telegram channels branded Antoni Lallican as a “propagandist” — a recurring tactic used to discredit journalists covering the war in Ukraine.

Russia ranks 171 out of 180 countries and territories in our 2025 World Press Freedom Index. Journalists like Antoni face mounting risk and relentless attacks on their credibility, and every donation to RSF is an act of resistance. By supporting our work, you give us the means to ensure journalists can continue investigating, documenting and bringing the truth to light — in Ukraine and around the world.

Thank you for your trust and your commitment.
