John — I wanted to make sure you saw our message yesterday featuring rescue dog Belo’s story. When my team and I first met Belo, he was the most extremely emaciated dog we had ever seen come in alive. He was so starved you could see every rib ... every vertebra. He even lost the fat behind his eyeballs causing him painful ulcers. There is not a doubt in my mind that if he had been found just a day later, he would not have made it, and this would be a very different story.

In January 2025, 8-year-old Belo was found by the NYPD in a shopping bag, just hours away from dying. In extremely critical condition, he was severely emaciated, dangerously anemic, covered in deep infected pressure sores, his organs were shutting down and he was unable to stand or even sit up on his own.

With intense, round-the-clock care at the ASPCA, Belo began to get better, and after eight long weeks, he finally took his first steps. Proving his resilience, throughout the immense amount of pain Belo endured, he always remained calm, joyful and eager to greet everyone around him.

Thanks to compassionate animal lovers like you, we were able to provide Belo with the lifesaving care he needed and find him a safe and loving home. But right now, there are thousands of animals like Belo still out in the cold, experiencing extreme cruelty and neglect, living in constant fear and wondering when their nightmare will end.
