Surveillance is the leading edge of targeted repression. By its design, it aims to instill fear in our collective psyche and splinter us into silos of silence and shame. Under the current Trump administration, the playbook of discriminatory, targeted surveillance has once again been deployed with a focus on online speech. Too many in our communities have faced professional and educational repercussions, doxxing, and physical threats, both because of our identities and because our belief in justice and equity threaten this Administration's authoritarian objectives.
The fight against surveillance is not new to Muslim Advocates. In 2012, we partnered with the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) in Hassan v. the City of New York , a landmark federal lawsuit to stop the New York Police Department’s surveillance of Muslim Americans. This year, efforts to surveil and intimidate private citizens have dramatically increased. That’s why, in November, Muslim Advocates sued the Trump administration on behalf of some of the largest, most respected labor unions in the country—United Auto Workers, the Communication Workers of America, and the American Federation of Teachers—to stop the repression of free speech through unwarranted monitoring of social media activity. On the 20th anniversary of our founding, the persistence of this discriminatory pattern is not lost on us. We must remain vigilant and ready to stand against state targeting of our communities whenever it emerges.
Join our community of supporters and make a gift to Muslim Advocates today. Help us defend the things that matter to you. We will put your investment to work right away.
