Dear Friends,

This is Congress’ last week in session for 2025, which means there are only a few days left to extend the cost-saving Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which make health care affordable for many South Texans.

If Republicans allow these credits to lapse, many Americans will see their insurance premiums skyrocket in the new year, including 142,000 people in South Texas. As a result, a 60-year-old couple will see their premiums rise by $16,983, according to the House Budget Committee Minority.

On top of the affordability crisis caused by reckless Republican policies and tariffs, the last thing hardworking South Texans need is another hefty bill at the end of each month. That’s why I am calling on Speaker Johnson to reverse his outrageous decision to not hold a vote this week on extending these health care tax credits.

I want to hear from you: Do you think Congress should extend health care tax credits and save families money?

ICYMI: Honoring the life of Seaman Angelina Resendiz and Protecting Future Service Members

 Image

To keep Americans safe and our military strong, Congress has an annual obligation to shape our nation’s defense priorities. That’s why I helped pass the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), to support well-deserved pay raises for all service members, including those at installations in Kingsville and Corpus Christi.

Also included alongside this bill is a report containing language I authored in response to the horrific murder of Brownsville native, Seaman Angelina Resendiz, to increase accountability, transparency and urgency in investigating the disappearance of service members while on duty. Once the NDAA is signed into law, the Secretary of Defense will be required to brief Congress within 180 days on the number of service members found deceased in the last five years while on duty and outlining how being designated as “Unauthorized Absence (UA)” or “Absent Without Leave (AWOL)” instead of “Duty-Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN)” impacted investigative response times in these cases. Despite early warnings from her colleagues, friends and family, Seaman Resendiz was missing for nearly two weeks before her body was found in a wooded area near Naval Station Norfolk on June 9, 2025.

We must do better by the brave men and women who answer the call to serve, and this is an important step towards ensuring no family endures the same pain and uncertainty as the Resendiz family.
