Email from Finchem for AZ Senate Student exploitation!     Hello John, What I uncovered this week at the Legislature should anger every Arizona taxpayer. A state audit revealed that WestMEC - a taxpayer-funded career education district - spent $155,000 sponsoring Phoenix Raceway, supposedly to give students “hands-on experience.” Here’s what actually happened. Students were put to work for free, doing menial labor like collecting tickets and putting up signs - often outside their fields of study. Meanwhile, administrators justified the spending as “student opportunity.” That’s not education. That’s exploitation - and it may be illegal. During the hearing, I called it exactly what it is: Outrageous. The state auditor found the sponsorship may have violated Arizona’s constitutional gift clause, which prohibits public money from being handed over to private entities without a clear public benefit. And it doesn’t stop there. The same audit found WestMEC also spent thousands of dollars on food, entertainment, and golf tournament tickets for staff - all while asking voters to approve a $415 MILLION bond, which narrowly passed in November. Let me be crystal clear: -Taxpayer dollars are for students, not corporate sponsorships -Bond money is for education, not perks and prestige -And no district gets a free pass just because they slap the word “career” on the door When I warned WestMEC that this kind of behavior can sink public trust - and future bond issues - I meant it. Because accountability matters, and someone has to say no when the system gets comfortable wasting your money. This is exactly why I do what I do at the Capitol.
