Friend,
As our nation mourns the passing of civil-rights icon Rep. John Lewis, there will be a lot of discussions about his legacy and his historical impact.
What’s less known is that Rep. Lewis was a courageous fighter for media justice. In fact, in 2010, Lewis called on Obama’s FCC to pass the strong and enforceable Net Neutrality rules that were eventually put into place (and then undone by the Trump administration).
In 2015, my colleague Joe Torres had the pleasure of meeting Rep. Lewis while part of a delegation on Capitol Hill talking to lawmakers about why Net Neutrality is a critical racial-justice issue.
Read this blog post to learn more about Rep. John Lewis’ legacy of fighting for media justice.
Like so many issues that Lewis spent his life fighting for, the struggle for a free and open internet continues. But the congressman was known for urging everyday people to get into “good trouble” whenever they witness injustice, and that’s what we all must continue to do.
Thanks for all you do,
Lucia and the rest of the Free Press team
