John,
Today, the House GOP is moving forward with a vote on a healthcare bill that leaves Latino families directly in harm’s way. While Republicans claim to be lowering costs, they are refusing to renew the enhanced ACA premium tax credits that millions rely on to afford coverage. The result is clear.
According to our new report, written in both English and Spanish and featuring data from the Urban Institute, around 1 million Latinos are at risk of losing health coverage if Republicans continue to block a renewal of the enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits.[1]
Latino communities are already more likely to be uninsured and to work in jobs that do not offer employer coverage. Our research shows that families in Latino-heavy industries like food service, construction, healthcare support, and transportation could see roughly $1,500 a year in higher out-of-pocket costs under Trump-GOP tax and health policies. That includes higher premiums and fewer options when someone gets sick.
At the same time that Latino families are being squeezed, the biggest healthcare corporations are thriving. Profitable insurers and hospital chains have saved tens of billions in taxes under Trump-GOP tax laws while continuing to raise prices and deny care. Executives are taking home pay packages north of $20 million a year.
This is why Americans for Tax Fairness’ research matters so much right now. It gives Latino organizers, Spanish-language media, and local advocates the hard facts they need to show voters exactly who is being hurt and who is being protected. It connects Republican tax policies directly to rising premiums, lost coverage, and financial stress in Latino households. And it makes clear that this outcome is a political decision, not an accident.
Will you donate today to help power the research, outreach, and organizing that ensures Latino families know what this House vote means for them?
If Republicans don't act, premiums for subsidized ACA enrollees are projected to rise by about 114% next year, jumping from roughly $888 a year to nearly $1,904.[2] For a single person making around $28,000 a year, that means premiums jumping from about 1% of income to nearly 6%. Many families simply will not be able to afford it.
Latino voters deserve the truth about what is happening. They deserve to know that Republicans are choosing to protect corporate tax breaks while allowing healthcare costs to skyrocket. Our work ensures that truth breaks free of the spin and reaches the communities most at risk.
Your support today helps fund the research, Spanish-language media outreach, and the organizing needed to make this vote impossible to ignore. When the consequences hit, families should already know who made this choice.
