Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence

John,

When a tragedy occurs, the world sees a headline. But we, as teachers, see a community. And for those who have survived, the journey toward healing often feels impossible.

Yet a core truth has emerged from the hardest experiences: the unique strength survivors bring to one another.

Three teachers who taught at Sandy Hook School—Robin Walker, Liesl Fressola, and Amy Taylor—know this firsthand. They are now part of our Crisis Intervention and Support Leadership team, and their words offer a powerful reminder of how we build a path forward:

“After our shooting at Sandy Hook School in 2012, we had visits from some of the Columbine teachers and staff, as well as visits from an Amish community that had also experienced a school shooting... Their ability to survive to the point they could reach out to help others gave me hope. Maybe I can provide that same hope to others who have been victims of school shootings.” - Robin Walker “I joined this team because I know the unique strength survivors can bring to one another. I am stronger because of the survivors who took time to make space for me, and it would be an honor to pass on that wisdom and power to others.” - Liesl Fressola “After surviving the shooting at Sandy Hook School, I was lost, damaged, unable to figure out how to endure. The people around me, the connections I made with people who truly understood, provided the guiding light to help me continue moving forward. Helping others on this harrowing journey is imperative.” - Amy Taylor

These women are leading the way to support and secure our schools. They center our work in the deep compassion and trauma-informed guidance that only teachers and survivors can provide. In the wake of yet another preventable tragedy, this time at Brown University, we're reminded of just how important our work is and how many survivors we can support.

Teachers Unify exists to ensure that no teacher has to navigate this harrowing journey alone. Your support allows us to expand the support networks, resources, and preventive strategies that turn trauma into systemic care.

Will you stand with us and support this critical work with a gift today?

Thank you for helping us lead with care, build resilience, and create the future our students and educators deserve.
