Over a decade ago, a gunman walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and killed 20 first graders and six educators. That shooting remains the deadliest attack at an elementary school in United States history.
Last week, students at Brown University ran for their lives on the second day of finals when a gunman opened fire on campus. Two people were killed and nine more were injured. Most of the victims were students.
Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children and teens in this country. That is not normal, and it is not acceptable.
We can’t bring back the children and educators who were killed at Sandy Hook, or the lives taken at Brown, or the lives taken in far too many other school shootings. What we can do is refuse to look away and recommit to the work of prevention, policy, and culture change that keeps people safe.
This week, we are asking our community to do one clear thing:
Add your name to our petition calling on lawmakers to put safety first and treat gun violence as the public health crisis it is.
When you sign, you are joining a growing chorus of parents, students, educators, and advocates who are insisting on more than moments of silence. You are helping us show that there is a powerful, organized public that expects actions.
Thank you for refusing to accept this as the cost of going to school.
