In the remote mountains of northern Afghanistan, a pregnant woman goes into labor. Complications arise. The nearest medical center is hours away — past steep, unforgiving terrain.

Every two hours, this is exactly how a woman dies in Afghanistan, wanting for transportation, skilled medical care, and clinics stocked with lifesaving medicines and supplies.

When crisis strikes, an ambulance isn’t simply transportation. It can mean the difference between life and death in those desperate moments when help is needed immediately.

Unfortunately, for thousands of pregnant women in the furthest reaches of Afghanistan, they can’t always count on an ambulance to be there when they need it. That’s why UNFPA operates mobile clinics — so women and girls always have access to the care they need, when they need it.

Last month, we delivered ambulances in Jawzjan and Sar-e Pul in Afghanistan, to facilitate timely support for pregnant women requiring urgent medical attention in remote areas of the two provinces.

“These ambulances are a crucial step in improving access to lifesaving health services, ensuring emergency medical care reaches those in need,” UNFPA representative Muriel Mafico said.

UNFPA mobile health clinics are lifelines that can thread through mountain passes, reach isolated villages, carry pregnant women in crisis or critically ill newborns, and ensure the safe arrivals of mothers and their babies at well-equipped healthcare facilities. This access to emergency care can determine the course of an entire family’s future.

And, you can help reach even more women who are still waiting for that lifeline.

Your compassion powers care in places shattered by conflict, climate disaster, and collapsing health systems. As the UN’s lead agency for sexual and reproductive health, UNFPA brings support to the world’s most crisis-affected communities — but it’s your generosity that puts help directly into the hands of women and girls.

So please, make a tax-deductible gift today to put more ambulances and mobile health teams on the road in remote villages across Afghanistan and the globe. This holiday season, your gift will be matched, allowing you to provide 100% MORE support. [[link removed]?]
