Without a vaccine or treatment, the best defense we have against COVID-19 is reliable, widely available data. But last week, the Trump administration took steps that will undermine the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and make it harder for governments, public health experts, journalists, and the American public to access vital data about the expanding pandemic. 

The consequences could be deadly.

As the pandemic continues to spread in the U.S. and deaths in America approach 150,000, the administration has instructed hospitals to stop sharing data with the CDC. Instead, they must send it directly to Trump's Department of Health and Human Services in Washington. 

This change serves no apparent purpose, except to give this administration -- which has consistently ignored experts and science -- greater control of how and what information reaches the public.
