John,
Campaigns get summarized by headlines and margins. But when you look closely at how progress actually happens, the story is far more personal. Some of the most consequential work in our party is done by people who simply see a need and step in to help.
That’s why I continued my Unsung Hero program this year. We asked leaders across Connecticut to nominate volunteers who embody that spirit; the people who write the stories but don’t always make the headlines. Here are just a few of the people who made a difference this year:
In Stamford, Susana Vidan keeps all of the historical data and predicts turnout and win numbers. This year she helped get 40 Board of Reps members elected, including winning citywide candidates, and the Mayor’s seat. It was a herculean effort making sure every candidate and district had a plan to win.
In Southbury, Fran Tepperman stepped up to Treasurer after the caucus and handled all the filings, budgets, and spending. Beyond that, she did all event planning and coordination, ran messaging, the website, social media, and letters to the editor coordination.
In West Haven, Ernie Chiarelli has served as Headquarters and Election Day Coordinator. He sets up and organizes, hires and trains unofficial checkers for all 10 voting districts, coordinates rides to the polls, and supports 22 candidates. Without his knowledge, and organizational skills, the West Haven Democratic Party would not be what it is today.
In Old Lyme, if something needed to be done, Diane Linderman was there. She signed up for almost every door knocking shift and organized sign distribution so requests could be tracked and improved for the future. When something came up, she was the first to raise her hand and say, “I can do that.”
In New Hartford, Kristin Young has elevated the image, messaging, and social media profile of the New Hartford DTC. She successfully managed the recent municipal campaign with motivation and inspiration that spread to everyone involved. She set high standards and did not hesitate to step in herself to meet them.
Our wins are powered by people who do not ask for credit, do not seek the spotlight, and simply step in wherever they are needed.
To every volunteer who gave their time, energy, and heart to the Connecticut Democratic Party this year, thank you.
You are the foundation of everything we do and bring such value to our work.
In partnership with you,
Jimmy Tickey
