Just days ago, I sat down with Charlamagne tha God on The Breakfast Club and told him the story of confronting racism on the floor of the South Carolina State House. I talked about standing up when my colleagues stayed silent as white supremacy was treated like just another policy debate.

Yesterday, that same hatred showed up in my campaign.

During an online campaign event, someone entered the chat and wrote:

 “Trump is going to remove you n****** soon its only a matter of freaking time. YOU STUPID BLACK N******.”

John, this is the reality of running for office as a Black man who refuses to stay quiet. That statement wasn’t shocking. It was familiar.

But what matters is not that racism like this exists. What matters is how people like you and I respond to it. If you stand with me against these attempts at racist intimidation, will you chip in any amount you can to support my campaign?

I have watched people with power stay quiet while racism moved through the State House like it was normal. I have seen white supremacy treated as something to maneuver around instead of confront. Now that same hatred is turning its attention to this campaign.

The thing about me, John, is that I don’t soften the truth to make others comfortable, I don’t lower my voice when the moment demands clarity, and I don’t shy away from calling out racism when I encounter it. 

South Carolina deserves leadership that will not look away when hate shows up, whether it comes from a floor vote or an anonymous threat. That’s the fight I am in, and I need good folks like you to stand with me.
