Dear John, Following backroom deals by congressional leadership, two anti-trans bills will be voted upon in the House tomorrow (Wednesday, Dec. 17th) and Thursday (Dec. 18th). Together, they threaten the dignity, safety, and respect transgender youth deserve. H.R. 3492 would criminalize gender-affirming care for transgender young people at the federal level—making it a felony punishable for both parents and providers by up to 10 years in prison. The language is so broad that it could interfere not only with doctors’ ability to provide best-practice medical care, but also with parents’ ability to support their own children. H.R. 498 would eliminate Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care for transgender young people, placing essential healthcare even further out of reach for families who need it most. |
