Find your winter escape in nature 

With all the rush and bustle of the holiday season, it's important to take some time for yourself. Here are a few ways to indulge in the serenity of the Nebraska outdoors: 

• Book a stay at a Nebraska state park. Many cabins and lodge rooms are discounted this time of year, and make a wonderful escape amid the beauty of the outdoors. Book now!
• Attend a festive park event. Whether you want to meet Santa, enjoy a lighted hayrack ride or experience a holiday lights display, you can find it at a Nebraska state park!
• Learn something new at a nature center. Indulge your curiosity with live animal exhibits, interactive displays and more at places like Schramm Education Center near Gretna and Wildcat Hills Nature Center by Scottsbluff.
• Enjoy historical holiday atmosphere. Get a glimpse of holidays past with Christmas at the Cody’s at Buffalo Bill Ranch or Christmas at the Mansion at Arbor Day Lodge state historical parks.
• Step back in time at a museum or visitor center at a Nebraska state historical park. You'll have the place to yourself, since many museums and visitor centers are open only by appointment this time of year. Just be sure to call ahead!
• Get active! Choose a trail for some hiking. Or develop your archery and target shooting skills at the Turpin Outdoor Education Center's indoor shooting ranges in Lincoln, and burn some energy at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park's Activity Center and Venture Climb.
