Dear Health Advocates,
While the Senate last week failed to pass bills to extend the enhanced premium tax credits, this week the action is in the House. Republican leadership is offering a health package that doesn’t include any extension of the tax credits, opting instead to platform a host of conservative health policy options that make coverage more expensive and strip benefits from people. Despite promises from leadership for an amendment to extend enhanced premium tax credits, that is no longer going to be offered. We expect a vote on this bill on Wednesday.
However, there are several discharge petitions; with 218 signers, these could come up for a vote. For example:
House Democrats have introduced a discharge petition for a three-year, clean extension of the enhanced tax credits. The content of this proposal mirrors the Senate bill from last week, which failed to gather enough support to pass.
Two bipartisan discharge petitions: 1) a two-year extension of the enhanced credits with an income cap, more access to health savings account (HSA), and the elimination of zero-premium plans, sponsored by Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Jared Golden (D-ME); and 2) a one-year extension of the enhanced credits, coupled with consideration of broader health reforms, fraud protection strategies, and an extended open enrollment period, sponsored by Reps. Jen Kiggans (R-VA) and Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ).
Although the path forward on an extension of the tax credits is narrow, it is clear that House members across the aisle understand how little time there is to address the significant, impending impact of failing to act on the enhanced subsidies – that is, health care costs skyrocketing for millions of families and individuals, and fewer people enrolled in comprehensive health care coverage.
It is our job to keep up the pressure on Congress to pass a bill that extends the enhanced premium tax credits as soon as possible – take action using the resources below!
