My name is Mia Tretta. I'm a junior at Brown University. And this is my
second school shooting.

When I was 15 years old, I was shot in the stomach, and my best friend was
killed next to me during the shooting at Saugus High School in 2019.

I already know what it's like to have your community shattered by gun
violence, to return from winter break missing two of your classmates. But
this is not a fact of life, and we don't have to live like this.

Our lawmakers are voted into office because we think they can keep us
safe, healthy, and happy. But if we can't even walk to class or go to the
mall or go to see a movie without fear of getting shot, then our lawmakers
aren't doing their jobs.

My heart goes out to the victims and survivors, as well as their families
and friends, because I know what it's like to be there. I know what it's
like to be in critical condition, being talked about during a press
conference for the latest mass shooting. But unfortunately, my thoughts
and my prayers aren't enough, so I will honor them with action. And I urge
all of you to do the same.
