Hello, everyone. We’re running out of time. If you didn’t love Inkstick, you wouldn’t be reading this right now. That’s why I have to ask you to donate today. Our annual fundraising drive only has a little more than two weeks left. If you cough up a buck or two before the end of the year, NewsMatch will double your contribution. Your $50 gets Inkstick $100. Your $300 gets Inkstick $600. Every penny will go directly toward our reporting. Will you do us a solid? In a new essay, author and expert on the US far right Shane Burley examines the growing faultlines inside the Republican Party as Israel becomes the issue that splits the GOP. In Hawai’i, as Inkstick regular Jon Letman reports, Indigenous locals have become tried of the US military’s poor custodianship of the land it occupies. That’s not all we’ve got at Inkstick. And if you’re not already, please follow us on LinkedIn, Threads, Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and YouTube. “Hawai‘i Communities Challenge Army’s Pōhakuloa Lease Renewal” by Jon Letman (Dec. 8) In a tropical island paradise where the world’s wealthiest individuals (Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and others) purchase sprawling private enclaves and entire islands, there is one entity that has scored a land deal that would make even a billionaire blush: the US military. “A Granular Look at the Iranian Embassy in London’s Hostage Crisis” by Katherine Voyles (Dec. 9) Ben Macintyre’s The Siege: A Six-Day Hostage Crisis and the Daring Special-Forces Operation that Shocked the World is both a densely detailed account of a particular siege. It is also a necessary rumination on matters that exceed the specificity of the six days about which he writes. “How US Militarism Supercharges the Climate Crisis” by Sam Carliner (Dec. 10) The new documentary Earth’s Greatest Enemy shows the global human toll of military pollution — and makes a powerful case for why environmental justice demands demilitarization. “The Growing Fight Over Zionism in the Heart of the GOP” by Shane Burley (Dec. 11) The Republican Party was a dependable and stalwart supporter of Israel for a long time. Now that its far-right wing is moving closer with outright white nationalists, more Republicans are calling for the GOP to drop Israel. “Deep Dive: At Alligator Alcatraz, ‘Torture’ and ‘Disappearances’” by Inkstick (Dec. 12) A new Amnesty International report documents severe human rights violations at Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” and Miami’s Krome detention centers. The report concludes that conditions “amount to torture” and describes enforced disappearances, unsanitary facilities, and punitive confinement practices.
