Hanukkah is a powerful celebration that honors the courageous spirit of the Maccabees, who reclaimed Jerusalem for the Jewish people against overwhelming odds. It reminds us of our enduring struggle for survival, our resistance to assimilation, and our unyielding commitment to live freely in our ancestral homeland.
This year, as we light the Hanukkah candles, we are also painfully reminded of the recent antisemitic terror attacks in Australia and at Brown University, tragic events that underscore that the fight against Jew-hatred is far from over. Hanukkah calls us to stand strong against the darkness of antisemitism.
Let us unite to defend the right of the Jewish people to live safely and freely in Israel and to protect the civil rights of Jews around the world. May the lights of Hanukkah inspire us to boldly uphold our existence and our values wherever they are threatened.
