We are going to get through the coronavirus outbreak together. If you are experiencing symptoms or are looking for more information, you can visit the website of the CDC or the Illinois Department of Health. We are closely monitoring the situation and its effects on the people of Illinois and our nation as we work together to keep our families and communities safe.
Remember those terrifying images we saw of children, separated from their parents, left in cages like animals? An ICE detention center is one of the worst possible places for people to be trapped in during this pandemic — no masks, no hand sanitizer, and certainly no space to social distance. Over 3,180 immigrants have tested positive for COVID-19 in ICE custody — and that number is only growing. We must take action — immigrants and refugees are welcome here. Last week, Onoval Perez-Montufa, a 51-year-old immigrant from Mexico, died of COVID while in ICE custody. Onoval had a family and loved ones. He didn’t deserve to die. But thousands of detainees in ICE custody are testing positive for COVID-19. The life-threatening conditions of ICE detention camps were inhumane before there was a deadly virus involved. Now ICE officers are letting immigrants needlessly suffer and die without any protection against COVID.
Together, we will fight to stop this. Thank you for taking action. Team Chuy |
