My dear friend Congressman John Lewis worked every day to make our world a more humane and just place. John put his own safety on the line to demand voting rights in Selma and continued the fight for 33 years in Congress.

It was a great honor to work with him on several important civil rights bills. His moral and tactical leadership was essential to passing the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Equality Act in the House, and many more. He has touched every American life with his work.

I’ll never forget the sit-in he led in 2016 demanding Congress finally take action to address the tragedy of gun violence. It is no exaggeration when John Lewis was named “the conscience of the Congress.”

As movements rise to confront the injustice and systemic racism throughout our society, we will miss Congressman Lewis’s voice.

My heart is with his family, friends, staff, and everyone else whose lives he touched.

In honor of John, let’s keep getting into “good trouble” because we need it now more than ever.

Sincerely,

Jerry
