Before I ran for the U.S. Senate, I was an investigative journalist leading a team that exposed government corruption, war crimes, and abuses of power worldwide.

My team worked in places where criticizing the government is dangerous, where whistleblowers and witnesses have to meet in secret, where protest carries the risk of prosecution.

This New York Times report on our own Justice Department reminds me of those places.

More and more, our government under Trump reminds me of places with brazen corruption at the highest levels, and where the justice system is a political weapon wielded by the ruler to crush the opposition.

• [The lawyers] described being asked to drop cases for political reasons, to find evidence for flimsy investigations and to take positions in court they thought had no legitimate basis. They also talked about the work they and their colleagues were told to abandon — investigations of terrorist plots, corruption and white-collar fraud.

This should chill us to the bone.

Friend — As Trump dismantles checks on his power and purges the government to fill it with loyalists, more and more Americans are too afraid of retaliation or even prosecution to speak up.

This descent into an un-American America must be stopped. We must regain Congressional power before it’s too late. We must restore checks and balances. We MUST win.

I am the only Democratic Senator running for re-election in a state Trump won.
