Friend: Imagine being confused, dehydrated and absolutely terrified as you’re crammed into a small trailer. You’re trapped in the dark, being driven miles across the border to a terrible fate. 

That’s the reality horses who have been sent to slaughter are facing. And as if the transportation wasn’t cruel enough, they end up at a slaughter plant, where they rarely experience quick, painless deaths due to their anatomy and instinctual flight response to danger. It’s truly horrific. 

At Humane World Action Fund, formerly called Humane Society Legislative Fund, we believe it doesn’t have to be this way. Even though horse slaughter plants have not operated in the U.S. for years, there are still thousands of American horses being transported across our borders to their deaths.  

Right now, we have the opportunity to put an end to this by passing the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, which would ban the export of American horses for slaughter abroad and keep horse slaughter plants permanently closed on U.S. soil.
