This holiday season, while we’re celebrating at home with our loved ones, countless animals will be left vulnerable to unthinkable cruelty, abuse, neglect, hunger and homelessness. They’re left wondering why they’re being punished this year and what they’ve done to deserve this treatment when they’ve done nothing wrong.

When we first met Belo, he was one of these animals. In fact, it was reported that he was the most emaciated animal we’ve ever seen come into our care alive.

We’re about to tell you his story, one of harrowing cruelty and inspiring resilience, but first we have to ask: can you please donate to our Holiday Food & Supplies Drive today to let animals like Belo know they have not been forgotten this holiday season?

In January 2025, 8-year-old Belo was found by the NYPD in a shopping bag, just hours away from dying.

In extremely critical condition, he was severely emaciated, dangerously anemic, covered in deep infected pressure sores, his organs were shutting down and he was unable to stand or even sit up on his own.

With intense, round-the-clock care at the ASPCA, Belo began to get better, and after eight long weeks, he finally took his first steps. Proving his resilience, throughout the immense amount of pain Belo endured, he always remained calm, joyful and eager to greet everyone around him.

Thanks to compassionate animal lovers like you, we were able to provide Belo with the lifesaving care he needed and find him a safe and loving home.

But right now, there are thousands of animals like Belo still out in the cold, experiencing extreme cruelty and neglect, living in constant fear and wondering when their nightmare will end.

Please, make your first holiday gift right now to help them.

A gift today will not only help ensure that our critical work for animals like Belo can continue, but it will give them hope that this might be the year they finally experience their first safe holiday season, and an even better New Year.
