<[link removed]> Dear Friends and Neighbors, I am heartbroken by the shooting that took place at Brown University. As a survivor of gun violence, the shock of unthinkable news and the constant feeling that safety is fragile are all too familiar. But nothings worse than the silence that follows from legislators who refuse to pass common sense gun legislation. My thoughts, prayers, and actions are with the victims, their families, students, staff, and community members whose sense of safety was shaken by this violence. The Providence Police Department announced that the person of interest was released <[link removed]> . The investigation has been ongoing and remains fully active between all agencies. Since the first call to 911 the city has not received any specific threats to our community. The Providence Police Department asked that any and all video or photos from the Brown campus area be submitted via phone at 401-272-3121 or to the FBI tip line <[link removed]> . Theirs currently a $50,000 reward and the police released these new videos. The Providence Center has specialty trained crisis staff set up for the week from 8 am – 4:30 pm Monday In the upcoming legislative session, I will be calling for the introduction and passage of a Rhode Island School Safety Act modeled after the California School Safety Act. It's a tax on firearms and ammunition that funds school safety, violence prevention, and intervention strategies. I’ll also be renewing calls for a Gun Violence Prevention Office at the state level. We need a coordinated office around gun violence prevention. You can sign up to testify, write a statement, email, or call your legislator <[link removed]> in support of these common-sense measures. Other states have shown this can be done responsibly by placing an excise tax on gun and ammunition sales collected at the dealer level. I serve as the Co Vice-Chair of the Pathway To End Gun Violence City Council Committee and we’ve had multiple discussions around the gaps in school safety. Our students deserve to feel safe. At this time, we need thoughts, prayers, and action. The most urgent call to action is to support the victims by making a financial contribution to support affected students through Brown University's Student Emergency Support Fund that can provide support for all students financially impacted by this tragedy. People who would like to contribute are encouraged to donate online here. <[link removed]> The Rhode Island Blood Center has extended hours at some locations to accept blood donations.
