New Orleans DSA's Annual Convention is This Saturday!
Hi everyone!
Mark your calendar - Part II of our 2020 Local Convention is this Saturday, July 25 at 2 PM. The Convention is an important opportunity to make your voice heard in our democratic process, where members in good standing can vote on proposed political resolutions that shape our organizing, as well as amendments to our chapter’s bylaws. You can read these proposals ahead of time here, and don’t forget to make sure that your DSA dues are up to date to ensure your eligibility to participate! Once you’ve done so, RSVP for the meeting ahead of time to be sent the Zoom link via email.
If you would like to submit amendments for any of these proposals, email [email protected] to have it discussed at the Convention. We will also be accepting amendments from the floor.
The Convention Committee has been working hard to plan a digital convention that prioritizes accessibility and democracy. Proposals will be displayed on the screen and debated. All members in good standing will be added to the #dues-only channel in Slack (a group messaging app) where the voting will take place and be tallied in real-time. If you’re not on Slack, reach out to [email protected] to be added, and be sure to download the app and get familiar with it before the 25th. You can find an introduction to how to use the app on our website.
We will use Robert's Rules to govern debate during this meeting, and we have a cheat sheet on our website about using Robert's Rules that could be useful to have open during the meeting. Speaking during meetings is managed using Progressive Stack, which ensures that we keep contributions to “one mic” - if you want to contribute, simply type “stack” in the Zoom chat box. Progressive Stack means that the stack keeper will prioritize calling on people who haven’t spoken or who come from marginalized communities.
For more information, visit the 2020 convention hub on our website, and don’t hesitate to reach out to [email protected] or call us at 504-457-8634 with any questions or, if you can’t make it day of, to arrange for a proxy to vote on your behalf!
