This week, the House plans to fast-track H.R. 1366, a bill that would hand millions of acres of Tribal and other public lands to mining companies with no public input and no consent. If it becomes law, mining corporations could bulldoze sacred sites, destroy lifelong homes and communities, and rip apart public lands—no permission required.

Despite its name, this bill makes one thing clear: it strips environmental protections and gives mining companies complete control over lands that belong to Tribes and the public. Federal agencies would be powerless to stop mining—even when it causes severe, irreversible harm.

For the Western Shoshone Tribe, this means unceded treaty lands could be given away with no recourse. In California, it could open Conglomerate Mesa to more extensive mining, permanently damaging sacred sites and Joshua Tree habitat.
