Dear John,
Yesterday in Sydney, Australia, while Jewish families were celebrating the first night of Hanukkah, 15 people were gunned down in a horrific act of Antisemitic terrorism.
My heart is with the grieving families in Sydney and to Jews around the world who are mourning when they should be celebrating this joyous holiday. We also are grateful for the heroism of Ahmed Al Ahmed who bravely disarmed one of the shooters.
We must always stand together to protect New Yorkers and all Jewish people from Antisemitism and all other forms of hatred. We need to find ways to squash racism and xenophobia where it festers.
There’s been a huge increase in Antisemitic crimes worldwide, and here in New York City. This year alone, we’ve seen political figures display Nazi signs and people in the public eye try to rewrite history, doubting the horrors of the Holocaust. This cannot be normalized and we can’t let this hatred win.
May the memories of those lost in Sydney light the way forward out of suffering and into peace.
Jami
