Dear John,
Apparently, denying evidence-based health care to children is the moral imperative of the holiday season. Instead of figuring out how to keep healthcare affordable this holiday season, anti-trans lawmakers in Congress are wasting no time advancing discriminatory legislation aimed at blocking children’s access to gender affirming care, with votes expected this week.
Gender-affirming care is safe and essential health care. These bills undermine the doctor-patient relationship and create new barriers to care. Everyone — including young people — deserves to make health care decisions with dignity, respect, and without political interference.
The Protect Children’s Innocence Act (H.R. 3492) targets gender-affirming care for transgender youth by threatening doctors and other medical providers with criminal penalties for delivering care that follows established medical standards and, in many cases, saves lives. The Do No Harm in Medicaid Act (H.R. 498) would deny young people access to this medically necessary care by cutting off Medicaid coverage.
Onward,
Rachel Deitch
Policy and Political Director
