Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates Law Enforcement News LA City Council approves $1 million funding proposal to hire more LAPD officers The Los Angeles City Council approved a $1 million funding proposal to hire more police officers, falling short of Mayor Karen Bass' request for $4.4 million. In a 9-6 vote, council members advanced Councilwomen Katy Yaroslavsky and Ysabel Jurado's budget increase to cover the additional hiring for the next two months. Council members Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Heather Hutt, John Lee, Traci Park and Imelda Padilla voted against the proposal, opting for a motion introduced by Councilman John Lee, which aligned with Bass' $4.4 million request. On Wednesday, Bass said the $4.4 million request would go to hire 410 more officers. Following the vote, she criticized the partial funding decision, stating the City Council skirted its responsibility to provide public safety "in favor of brinkmanship and bureaucracy." "Despite this difficult financial climate, Councilmember John Lee and I found the funding to continue hiring needed police officers. Yet, the City Council ignored our plan for police hiring – a disappointing and short-sighted decision, especially since fewer police officers means more overtime and higher costs for the city," Bass said in a statement after the council's vote. CBS 2 Son of director Rob Reiner arrested after parents found stabbed to death Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and booked after his parents were found dead in their Brentwood home on Sunday. He is being held on $4 million bail, according to police. No suspect or person of interest was initially named after the 78-year-old legendary Hollywood director was discovered with his wife, Michele Reiner, 68, in their home on the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue around 3:40 p.m. Both had suffered stab wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles Police Department said family members would be interviewed as part of the homicide investigation. On Monday morning, LAPD confirmed that Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested late Sunday night and booked. “We understand that the person reporting was here at the location. We’re not going to release any information regarding the identity of that individual at this time,” LAPD Chief of Detectives Alan Hamilton said during a news briefing Sunday night. Earlier reports suggested the Reiners’ daughter was at the scene and spoke to investigators. KTLA 5 Driver who ran red light is among 3 killed in multi-car crash in Panorama City, LAPD says Three people were killed when a speeding minivan ran a red light triggering a three-vehicle crash in Panorama City, authorities said Saturday. The crash was reported at 9:37 p.m. Friday at Terra Bella Street and Woodman Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. A speeding westbound gray Plymouth minivan on Terra Bella Street failed to stop for a red light and struck a blue Ford Mustang and tan Honda Civic that were both going southbound on Woodman, according to an LAPD statement. "Investigators believe the driver of the minivan was fleeing the scene of an unrelated collision prior to this crash," the statement said. "Following the collision, the driver of the Honda Civic exited the vehicle and fled the scene, failing to stop, identify themselves, and render aid as required by law." Arriving paramedics pronounced the driver of the minivan, the driver of the Ford Mustang and a passenger inside the Mustang dead at the scene. A man and a woman, both 20 years old, were pronounced dead in the Mustang and a 30-year-old man was pronounced dead in the minivan, according to spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz of the Los Angeles Fire Department. ABC 7 A young musician was gunned down in Northridge. Did childhood friends set her up? Around 1:30 a.m. on a Saturday last month, two masked men approached a black Cadillac Escalade idling outside a Northridge apartment building. One held a shotgun, the other a handgun. A surveillance system captured the sounds of what happened next: A gang challenge, confusion, a demand for property. Then six shots and sounds of the Escalade speeding off. In the passenger seat was Maria De La Rosa, 22, with a gunshot wound to the chest. A musician who performed as DELAROSA, she had a growing following at the time of her death on Nov. 22. Authorities said De La Rosa was killed during a robbery but revealed little else about the case. The Times recently reviewed a search warrant affidavit written by the Los Angeles Police Department detective who investigated the homicide. According to the document, De La Rosa was set up by her friends — two of three people now charged with her murder. Arrested the day after the homicide, Francisco “G Boy” Gaytan told police he’d known De La Rosa since they were teenagers, Det. Siranush Simonyan wrote in the affidavit. Gaytan said his friend, Benny “Player” Gomez, made plans to meet De La Rosa on Bryant Street for a “drug buy,” but the plan was to rob the musician, the affidavit said. Gaytan, Gomez and the two alleged gunmen are from Bryant Street, a gang in Northridge, according to the affidavit. Los Angeles Times Man sentenced to life in prison for fatal stabbing on Metro train in Studio City The man who was found guilty of stabbing and killing a 67-year-old woman on a Metro train in Studio City in 2024 has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentencing came down Friday after Elliot Tramal Nowden, 47, was convicted last month of using knives to kill Mirna Soza Arauz while trying to rob her aboard the train. Police said the stabbing occurred during the early morning hours as the train, which was headed toward downtown LA, arrived at the Universal/Studio City Station on Lankershim Boulevard near Universal Studios Hollywood. Private security officers working for Metro provided aid to Soza Arauz at the subway station while waiting for paramedics, who transported her to a hospital where she died, the LAPD said in a statement. In addition to the life sentence, a judge imposed an additional eight years behind bars for the robbery charge. NBC4 Investigates previously reported that Nowden had been imprisoned for assault for a similar crime: The now-convicted murder also was found guilty of attacking a train passenger in 2019 while he was on probation. Jail records and law enforcement officials confirmed Nowden was arrested several times before the stabbing death of Soza Arauz. NBC 4 Los Angeles-area law enforcement increases security near Hanukkah events after Australia shooting Los Angeles County law enforcement departments have upped their security near Jewish places of worship and Hanukkah events in the wake of a shooting that left more than a dozen people dead at a beach in Australia. Australian authorities said that a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son opened fire at Bondi Beach, a suburb near Sydney, while the local Jewish community was celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. The shooting left 15 people dead and nearly 40 others injured. In the hours after the shooting Los Angeles Police Department officers said that they would be adding extra patrols over the weekend. "The Los Angeles Police Department is deeply saddened by the tragic mass shooting attack that occurred during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia. We stand in solidarity with the Jewish Community in Australia and here in Los Angeles, and our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those impacted by this senseless act of violence," said a statement from the LAPD. CBS 2 FBI and DOJ prevent ‘terror plot' in California, AG Pam Bondi says In a social media post Monday morning, Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the Department of Justice and the FBI "prevented what would have been a massive and horrific terror plot in the Central District of California." According to Bondi, the Turtle Island Liberation Front "a far-left, pro-Palestine, anti-government, and anti-capitalist group—was preparing to conduct a series of bombings against multiple targets in California." The alleged series of bombings were going to begin on New Year’s Eve. “This was an incredible effort by our U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the @FBI to ensure Americans can live in peace. We will continue to pursue these terror groups and bring them to justice,” Bondi said. More details were expected at a news conference at 8:30 a.m. NBC 4 At least 2 killed, 8 critical in shooting at Brown University A shooter dressed in black killed at least two people and wounded eight others at Brown University on Saturday during final exams on the Ivy League campus, authorities said, and police were searching for the suspect. Officers scattered across the campus and into an affluent neighborhood filled with historic and stately brick homes, searching academic buildings, backyards and porches for hours after the shooting erupted. The suspect was a male in dark clothing who was last seen leaving the engineering building where the attack happened, said Timothy O’Hara, Deputy Chief of Police. Authorities believe the shooter used a handgun, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said a shelter-in-place was in effect and encouraged people living near the campus to stay inside and not to return home until it is lifted. “We have all available resources” to find the suspect, Smiley said. Emma Ferraro, a chemical engineering student, was in the engineering building’s lobby working on a final project when she heard loud pops coming from the east side. Once she realized they were gunshots, she darted for the door and ran to a nearby building where she was waited for a couple of hours. Associated Press Violent online groups like 764 are threatening teen lives. Here’s how to protect your kid Teens across America are being recruited, groomed and extorted by network of online predators known as 764 that specializes in coercing minors to perform sexual acts and self-harm on camera and, in some cases, encourages teens to kill themselves. Here is what parents need to know to keep their children safe on the internet and report online exploitation based on information provided by the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations. The term 764 is used to describe a loose network of violent online groups that prey on youth — typically girls between the ages of 10 to 17 struggling with mental health — across the world. They often groom their victims by establishing a friendly or romantic relationship and then threaten to dox them, publish their personally identifiable information online, or SWAT them, report a false 911 threat at their home. Once predators have obtained recordings of self-harm or child sexual abuse they continue to blackmail the youth to produce more. The groups try to desensitize children and make them more easy to manipulate by sharing violent content such as rape and beheadings. In later stages of abuse, they may attempt to coerce victims into committing suicide. Los Angeles Times Public Safety News Men smash window to rescue woman from burning car in Los Angeles A driver is recovering after two good Samaritans pulled her from a burning car in Los Angeles’ Beverly Grove neighborhood early Monday morning. A witness by the name of Arias said he saw the blue Toyota Camry crash into the back of a truck before it burst into flames, trapping a woman inside around 2:30 a.m. on the 6300 block of Drexel Avenue. “The driver of the truck got out. He basically had a fire extinguisher, so we tried to put out the fire the best we can,” Arias said. The two men were unable to douse the flames, so they focused on rescuing the woman, but they couldn’t open the doors. “The driver of the truck tried his best to bust the window open with the fire extinguisher, so I grabbed it and gave it another try, and I was able to bust the window open,” Arias said. The two pulled the woman to safety as firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished the blaze. She was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition. Arias said the woman suffered a burn to her leg and was in severe pain when they pulled her out. He and the other man sustained minor cuts during the rescue, but Arias said he felt compelled to help. KTLA 5 LA Fire Department gets a star on Hollywood Boulevard for its work during January fires The Los Angeles Fire Department Friday was honored with a star on Hollywood Boulevard, steps away from the Hollywood Walk of Fame thanks to a letter written by a 14-year-old girl. The LAFD received an Award of Excellence star for its public service while battling the Palisades and Sunset fires in January. The recognition came after a Connecticut eighth-grader wrote a letter to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, suggesting a star for the brave firefighters. "I know that the first responders aren't exactly celebrities, contrary to all others on the Walk of Fame, but I am confident that there won't be much opposition to recognize our modern-day heroes,'' Eniola Taiwo wrote as part of her class assignment about personal heroes. "This star for first responders will reach the hearts of many first responders and let them know that what they do is recognized and appreciated. ... It will also encourage young people like me to be a change in the world.'' Inspired by that letter, the Chamber of Commerce and Hollywood Community Foundation teamed up to present the Award of Excellence, which is in the form of a star, although it's not technically on the Walk of Fame. Similar awards have been presented in the past, with recipients including the Los Angeles Times, Variety, the Dodgers and Los Angeles Police Department fallen officers.
