Dear friend of IDP,
This year, I joined the Advisory Board for the Immigrant Defense Project. As a lifelong organizer, a human rights attorney, a city government veteran, and a child of immigrants myself - IDP’s mission is personal.
I first cut my teeth in grassroots immigrant organizing in the aftermath of 9/11, when Arab, Muslim and South Asian immigrants were being aggressively targeted by the U.S. government in the name of the war on terror. Policies of widespread surveillance, detention and deportation came with severe racial profiling and grave violations of due process rights.
I have long-admired the way IDP took the helm following the draconian mandatory detention and deportation laws passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton in 1996 - the system enabling so much of the cruelty before us today. IDP was where I always turned for advice on the most challenging cases, including my own father–in-law’s, who fought and won a deportation case emanating from these very laws. And I have watched IDP grow its strategies over the years - fighting criminalization, detention and deportation through a multipronged strategy of legal support and training, advocacy, litigation and narrative change. Like many other lawyers and advocates, I’ve often looked to IDP for innovative policy solutions, legal analysis and narrative guidance.
My work on the Board has also given me an inside look at IDP in this moment of crisis. What I have seen is that IDP is a small organization with an outsized impact in the field and a strong core principle that they hold others to: no one is disposable. At this time, IDP staff are working very hard to meet the moment - and they need our help.
I hope you will join me in this fight for immigrant rights by supporting IDP’s work this year.
