Team,
Right now, a bill to hold AI companies accountable, called the RAISE Act, is awaiting the governor’s signature in New York. It would require AI companies to write, publish, and follow safety and security protocols. And it would require transparency when safety incidents do occur.
While progress is stalled at the federal level, this type of legislation is possible in states across the country — and it can help keep us safe from AI harms. That’s why we’re speaking up to get this passed.
I wrote this op-ed with a fellow youth advocate at Columbia University about why we need to act now on AI.
READ THE OP-ED
When social media was created fifteen years ago, our policymakers failed to take action to protect the public from its harms. Now, the same companies that build and profit from social media are leading the race to develop increasingly advanced and unchecked AI systems (and they have help from the highest office to continue their race to the bottom! [1]). We can't afford to make the same mistakes now that we did last time.
Share our op-ed and continue to amplify youth perspectives like ours on this issue. New York is kicking off this fight, and with your support, this type of legislation can be replicated in states across the country.
In solidarity,
Matthew Stevens
