Friend,
The passing of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, is a loss
felt across our culture and our movement.
Rob was a towering figure in American life, someone whose work brought
humor, warmth, and humanity into millions of homes. But for those of us at
People For the American Way, his impact went far beyond the screen. He was
a longtime supporter of this organization and a close ally who never
separated creative expression from civic responsibility.
Like our founder Norman Lear, Rob believed that stories matter. That
culture shapes conscience. And that artists have both the opportunity and
the obligation to help widen our understanding of freedom, fairness, and
justice.

Below is the statement released earlier today by People For the American
Way President Svante Myrick:
People For the American Way’s staff and board are grieving the death of
Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. Like his dear friend and our founder
Norman Lear, Rob Reiner was committed to using his creative brilliance
not only to entertain people, but also to promote the values of freedom,
fairness, and justice. Rob loved our country and he supported artists
and activists who work to defend and strengthen what is best about it.
We share the sorrow of the Reiners’ family and friends, and the millions
of Americans whose hearts have been lightened and expanded by their
presence in our lives.
Rob believed deeply in participation, in speaking out, and in supporting
those who work every day to protect democracy and human dignity. Michele
stood alongside him in that belief. Their absence is deeply felt, but
their example remains.
As we grieve, we do so with gratitude for the lives they led and the
values they modeled. Rob and Michele reminded us that creativity, courage,
and conscience can and should move together.
We will remember them with admiration, affection, and resolve.
In gratitude and remembrance,
People For the American Way
