John,
Donald Trump has announced that he will veto any COVID relief bill that doesn't include his new pet cause: Defunding Social Security.
With expanded unemployment benefits due to expire, he's obsessed not with helping the 40 million people newly unemployed, but handing a massive tax benefit to corporations while eliminating one of the strongest reasons for Social Security's overwhelming popularity.
Read Michael's email to see what FDR said about why Social Security is funded by a payroll tax, and how we can stop Trump's obsession together! Then chip in $7 today!
Thanks,
Alex Lawson
Social Security Works
--MICHAEL'S EMAIL--
John,
Americans built our Social Security system together over the past 80+ years. While Wall Street has sought to destroy it, Social Security has been resilient because it is a simple, universal program.
Every time workers look at their paycheck, they are reminded that they own a piece of the Social Security system. That’s by design―as FDR said:1
With those taxes in there, no damn politician can ever scrap my social security program.
After trying and failing for decades to scrap the program, Trump and his Republcian cronies are out to scrap Social Security’s dedicated funding, the “payroll tax”.
Social Security Works is fighting back! With your help, Trump’s insidious plot to destroy our Social Security system will fail! Chip in $7 today!
Wall Street’s favorite politicians have a clear plan, and it doesn’t depend on Trump’s reelection.
First, they’ll scrap Social Security’s dedicated funding, claiming that it’s part of a pandemic economic response package.
Second, they’ll work to secure lower funding for Social Security permanently. If Trump wins re-election, they’ll eliminate the dedicated funding entirely,2 and if Biden wins, they’ll seek some “compromise,” calling the full restoration a massive tax increase, just like they did when the Bush tax cuts were scheduled to expire.
Finally, they’ll use Social Security’s lowered revenue as an excuse to destroy the program entirely. There are several proposals to do this, but the most dangerous is Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act. The TRUST Act would create a fast-track, closed-door process that could destroy Social Security and Medicare. But because it is written in the anodyne, faux-responsible language of “fiscal responsibility,” some Democrats don’t recognize how deadly it could be for programs that Americans treasure.
Together, we’re going to make sure Wall Street never gets past Step 1. The American people are united, and we’re making their voices heard! Chip in $7 today to fight these damn politicians!

With expanded unemployment benefits set to expire this week, our Representatives in Washington should be focused on helping people, not exploiting the crisis to achieve Wall Street goals.
Thanks,
Michael Phelan
