Dear Wilderness Defender,
I’m writing to you between meetings in Washington, D.C., where I'm spending the week with coalition members advocating for the permanent protection of the Boundary Waters.
Right now the threats are real, and they are escalating. The federal administration is laser-focused on opening up the watershed of the Boundary Waters to copper mining. Rep. Stauber’s latest bill would fast-track copper mining leases, putting sulfide-ore copper mines — the most toxic industry in America — directly upstream of the Boundary Waters. But we won’t let that happen.
We know 100% of copper mines pollute. Every accident is permanent. And the Boundary Waters is the wrong place for this type of toxic mining.
That is why we’re here this week, meeting with legislative offices from both sides of the aisle. We're sharing the overwhelming science and economic data. We're reminding them that this isn't abstract policy — it's about 1,100 of the cleanest boreal lakes in the world. It's about the last place in America where you can drink directly from the source. It's about protecting a refuge that belongs to all of us.
Will you make a gift today to power this advocacy work while we’re meeting with legislative offices?
