john,

As we gather with loved ones to celebrate Hanukkah, I've been reflecting on how meaningful this time of year is for my family.

Each night, when we light the menorah, I’m reminded of the warmth, resilience, and hope this holiday symbolizes. And as we mark the first night of Hanukkah, our hearts are with the Jewish community in Sydney, Australia. We are called to remember that this holiday represents the eternal victory of light over dark, and that even the smallest light can shine brightly in moments of uncertainty.

Just a few weeks ago, I was going through old family photos.

They reminded me that for over half a century, I’ve been cherishing the ritual of gathering with friends and family, lighting the menorah, singing songs, and spinning the dreidel.

It also grounded me. That’s just a tiny sliver of the two thousand years the Jewish people have been celebrating the victory of light over darkness and the miracle that against overwhelming odds, the Jewish people survived the Greek attempt to extinguish their religion. It is not lost on me that the Jewish people and the Jewish state of Israel continue to survive against the odds.

So we’ll carry on the Hanukkah tradition. We love taking the time to slow down, appreciate the light in others and in our lives, and to think about our place in history. I encourage all of you to carry on your own family traditions, and to always look for and find light.

Whether you celebrate with big family gatherings or quiet evenings at home, I hope this season brings you peace, joy, and plenty of light. From my family to yours: Happy Hanukkah!

— Kim
