Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org ([link removed]) | December 14, 2025 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council condemns in the strongest possible terms the horrific mass shooting that targeted members of Sydney’s Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration today at Bondi Beach in Australia. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people and left 29 others wounded, including police officers and bystanders.
Events meant to celebrate faith, community, and peace should never devolve into scenes of terror and loss. We mourn with the families who have lost loved ones and stand in heartfelt solidarity with the Jewish community in Sydney and around the world. Antisemitism and violence have no place in our societies.
We also honor the extraordinary courage of Ahmed al-Ahmed, an Australian Muslim father of two, who bravely tackled one of the attackers and wrestled his rifle away, an act credited with saving countless lives, even as he was wounded in the struggle. His heroism has rightly been recognized and praised by leaders and communities, including Australia’s prime minister and public figures across the country.
We echo Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s words that this attack was an “evil, antisemitic act,” and reaffirm that violence against any community, whether Jewish, Muslim, or otherwise, is an affront to our shared values of peace and humanity.
At this moment of grief, MPAC calls on all leaders and citizens, in Australia, here at home in the United States, and around the world, to reject antisemitism, Islamophobia, and division, and to uphold a message of mutual respect and solidarity. Our communities are stronger when we stand together against hatred, and we recommit to working alongside Jewish partners to promote peace, safeguard freedom of worship, and protect all communities from targeted violence.
We pray for the swift recovery of the injured and justice for all those affected by this senseless act.
