Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence

John,

I know the specific, chilling ache that comes with the headlines like those we saw yesterday. No one should be killed, shot, or traumatized at school.

This morning marks 13 years since the Sandy Hook School tragedy in Newtown. Out of respect for those most impacted over a decade ago, I didn’t want to email you today. But our hearts are broken over the tragedy that struck the Brown University community. I know too well the trauma and the emotional weight students and faculty are now carrying.

This is why we formed a Crisis Intervention and Support Team led by those who’ve been through these kinds of tragedies.

I refuse to accept that violence is an inevitable part of the educational experience.

As teachers and advocates, we are working together to ensure every school and community is safe. We are focused on solutions and advocacy, not reaction. We know trauma-informed protocols, secure-storage education, and policy shaped with educators are the essential building blocks for a safer future.

This tragic reminder underscores the urgency of our mission to equip teachers with the resources, training, and community support they need to build safer schools from the classroom out.

This weekend is hard but Teachers Unify is committed to building the future that school communities deserve.

Standing together in grief, and refusing to accept this as normal, and we will keep fighting for safety.
