John,

Trump’s Justice Department continues to fight against our democracy rather than protect it. This time, they’re intervening to block California’s new congressional map. That’s right: They’re trying to overturn the map that the majority of voters approved.

The hypocrisy is astounding. Trump’s Department of Justice is more intent on overturning the results of a free and fair election than it is on restoring the voting power of communities of color in states like Texas, where Republican politicians recently passed a gerrymander that strips fair representation away from countless voters.

Let me be clear: This is a blatant attempt to thwart the will of the people. We need the full strength of this grassroots movement to speak out against the federal government being weaponized against voters. [[link removed]]

As A.G. Holder put it: “Unlike the scheme imposed on the citizens of Texas, Californians just overwhelmingly voted in favor of the state’s new congressional map by nearly 30 percentage points at the ballot box to fight back against Trump’s gerrymandering scheme. That resounding rejection by the people clearly terrifies many Republicans and the Trump White House — it’s no wonder they are now resorting to hypocritical, desperate, and truly absurd lawsuits while at the same time continuing to beg Republicans across the country to gerrymander, all in an effort to circumvent the will of the people.”

It’s clear: The fair maps movement has our work cut out for us. We must come together to protect our democracy from this attack and any attempt to silence the will of voters.
