Virginia Adopts Emergency Workplace Safety Regulations
|
|
Last week, the Virginia Safety and Health Codes Board adopted an emergency temporary standard for COVID prevention in the workplace. The standards will be mandatory for most private and public employers in the Commonwealth, and can be enforced with fines. The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry is finalizing the temporary standard’s text, and expects to publish it during the week of July 27. The emergency standard will take effect upon publication and run for six months, until the expiration of Governor Northam’s State of Emergency, or until a permanent standard is enacted.
- Screening employees prior to entry to work
- Providing flexible sick leave policies, telework, and staggered shifts when feasible
- Notifying the Virginia Department of Health of positive COVID-19 tests and notifying Virginia Occupational Safety and Health of three or more positive COVID-19 tests within a two-week period
- Providing COVID-19 training of all employees within 30 days (low-hazard places of employment are excepted)
- Regulations for maintenance of air handling systems
The Virginia Chamber of Commerce will be holding a webinar on Tuesday, July 28 at 10:00-11:00 a.m. discussing these regulations and their impact on Virginia businesses. The webinar is free, but registration is limited and required. You can register for the webinar via this link.

On July 12, Recovery Program Solutions of Virginia (RPSV) began offering free and facilitated virtual support sessions for local businesses. RPSV's virtual support groups aim to alleviate the burden of mental health, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic where many working adults are concerned with the safety of returning to work. Businesses can customize the program to work with their team member's needs. RPSV operates five drop-in Recovery Centers alongside 15 telehealth online support groups, and Warm Line phone support during this time.
If you are a Chamber member and have any stories to share of your business supporting the local community during this difficult time, please tag the Chamber on social media and use the #Biz4Good, also contact Morgan Cooper, Communications Coordinator, for consideration to be included in a future e-newsletter.
